ObjectivesThe aim of this report is to make a description of the digestive tract of pigs and sheep and also to briefly explain the digestion process in ruminant and non-ruminant organisms. Additionally there will be an analysis of the results that were observed on practical dissection. The report will conclude with a comparison between the digestive tracts of pigs and sheep. IntroductionDigestion is the process by which food is broken down into smaller components to be more easily absorbed by an organism. During the digestion process food goes through several stages. The digestion process includes: the breakdown of food into smaller components, the absorption of the nutrients contained in the food by the body, and, in the final stage, the conversion of the food into feces and urine to be expelled from the body. There are two different types of digestive systems in mammals. The monogastric digestive system (mono=one, gastric=stomach) and the polygastric digestive system (poly=many, gastric=stomach). Pigs and humans are examples of monogastric organisms...
