People who constantly use their phones and gadgets to access social media are losing the human instinct to interconnect with the outside world. Almeida says, “Universal concern about social standing creates many unnecessary distortions in interactions and outings.” Almost everyone in this generation uses technology as it is a continuously progressing civilization, in technology that is; Furthermore, it is causing our civilization to rely more on technology rather than on others or its own well-being. Almeida says, “Again, almost no one, including myself, is exempt from this group that uses social media.” The world's population uses technology and these so-called friendships that people have online are not really friendships. People communicate, but they don't really get to know each other because no one knows who that person behind the mask really is. Almeida also states that they "rarely exist in reality". Due to hyperconnectivity, human civilization that revolved heavily around communication and knowledge is no longer forming friendships like previous generations did. While most of society is somewhat similar through social media nodes, not everyone is considered a friend as people may not even know each other; in fact, many may not even know who they really are
