Topic > Polio: History and Treatments of Polio - 981

Polio, also known as polio, is a contagious disease first found in England in 1789 by Michael Underwood. The first outbreaks were reported in the early 19th century and were first reported in the United States in 1843. No treatments for polio were found at first. Epidemics were increasing severely in the Northern Hemisphere. In 1952, 21,000 cases of paralytic polio were found in the United States. It took longer for polio to be recognized as a major problem in developing countries. Because the disease spread much more rapidly, the first routine vaccination was introduced worldwide in the 1970s to control the disease in many developing countries. Polio was eliminated from the Western Hemisphere around 1994 thanks to widespread vaccination. Polio is simply a viral infection that can cause paralysis, various breathing problems, or even death. It is difficult to find out if it is polio because 95% of all cases show no symptoms and only 5% of cases show symptoms. There are two types of polio; that which shows no symptoms is called asymptomatic polio and that which shows symptoms is called symptomatic polio. Furthermore, symptomatic polio can again be classified into two forms: non-paralytic polio and paralytic polio. Paralytic polio is severe compared to non-paralytic polio. Paralytic polio can be classified into three categories: spinal polio, which attacks the spinal cord; bulbar polio, which affects vision, breathing and swallowing, and spinal bulbar polio, which affects both the spinal and bulbar parts. People who are weakened by other medical conditions, meaning people who have weak immune systems and young and pregnant women are more likely to become infected. And every government and every organization should do their best to prevent obstacles in the countryside and spread the effect of polio virus. In conclusion, all I want to say is: let's hold hands and give our best to create a polio-free environment.
