When she kidnaps one of Okonkwo's daughters, he is completely powerless to stop her. In fact, when his wife, in a panic, makes a gesture to interfere with the kidnapping, Okonkwo is ready to kill her with his machete. Based on this example, one could argue that Chielo exhibits mystical behavior to escape the brutal control of the men of his village. Claiming that she carries out the will of her god, the village designates her as having divine qualities and she ascends beyond the reach of the other villagers. By evading the control of others while acting as a witch, Chielo further elucidates how men attribute divine qualities to women they cannot control. Through the contrast between the art of two distinct cultures, it can be assumed that the themes present in both cultures illustrate an intrinsic characteristic of humanity. Since the European culture of Heart of Darkness was not significantly altered by the African culture it subjugated, it can easily be compared to the non-subjugated African culture of Things Fall Apart.
