An analysis of Google's attempt to create an adventurous climateIn August 1998, two entrepreneurs, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, founded the Google company, Inc. Rapidly spreading across the world, Google is known as one of the largest search engines in today's market. Because of the company's large size and access to funding to fund new ideas, Google is very involved in corporate venturing, and has done so from the beginning. To begin with, it is important to define a business venture before trying to create a climate for new ideas. Block and MacMillan (1993) define a corporate venture as: Internal corporate initiatives (ICV) can include major new products, development of new markets, commercialization of new technologies, and major innovation projects. They may involve marked diversification or be closely related to the company's other activities. The main differentiating qualities are risk, uncertainty and significance. (p. 14)Google's corporate initiatives include major new products, the development of new markets, the commercialization of new technologies, and major innovation projects, both closely related to the current business and overall in new businesses. While it is important to note the types of business ventures, this paper will only look at the adventurous climate that Google has created and not necessarily the individual business ventures themselves. Perhaps the most critical challenge for senior management is creating pervasive commitment to new initiatives. business development (Block page 36). Google has successfully addressed this challenge in many different ways. Founders Page and Brin promoted development, creativity, entrepreneurship and risk-taking by setting an example for their employees. There are essentially ten strategies for creating an adventurous climate (Block p. 37). Google has created an adventurous climate by following these ten strategies. The first strategy is to insist that the entire division pursue new business development (Block p. 37). The Google Jobs website states: “We work hard to create an inclusive, collaborative, and innovative environment. One of the ways Google actively encourages innovation in the workplace is by promoting the “20% Project.” All Google engineers have 20% of their time to pursue projects they're passionate about. This led to the creation of some well-known Google products, such as Gmail and Google News, products that would otherwise have required the launch of entire start-ups” (www.google.com). This strategy has paid off for Google as the company has been listed in Fortunes list of 100 Best Companies to Work For.
