Topic > The role of women in The Dead - 1031 by James Joyce

She is very passionate about politics and very patriotic towards her Irish culture. We don't know much about her beyond her appearance, her encounter with the main character, and the fact that she's an Irish nationalist, but from the brief descriptions we can tell that she's the kind of woman who could be compared to Hilary Clinton. “She was not wearing a low-cut bodice and the large pin that was pinned to the front of her collar bore an Irish symbol.” (Joyce 2179) Since we know that Miss Ivors is a nationalist, therefore, the brooch she wore on her collar could have had a Celtic emblem on it. This emblem shows how committed she is to politics. Being the outspoken woman that she is, Miss Ivors talks to the main character, throwing little jabs at him and making him feel slightly intimidated. Women in society are usually not brave enough to approach a man and make him feel inferior. Having qualities of a feminist, she will let anyone, male or female, know when they are not right in their opinion. Women who tend to be strong in politics also tend to be very strong in their rights, so I consider this woman, Miss Ivors, to be a feminist or devoted to her femininity. She is described as a very intelligent person and an unassuming threat not only in the story with Gabriel but also to him
