The Control of Asbestos at Work Regulations were changed in 1993 to require the replacement of any asbestos-containing material wherever possible. Just one year before the end of the 20th century, a 1999 ruling saw a total ban on the use and import of chrysotile, which was still used well into the 1980s and 1990s in building materials and some products. As the second millennium passed, the 'duty to manage' policy was introduced in 2002 and provided further protection against exposure to asbestos in the workplace. A year later, in 2003, the Asbestos (Licensing) Regulations were amended again to ensure that the relevant authority was informed of the details of any asbestos work requiring a licence, at least 14 days before the work began.
