Topic > What are the three types of diabetes? - 881

There are three types of diabetes: type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes and finally gestational diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is commonly found in children and adolescents and occurs when the pancreas is at the point of not producing insulin. Insulin is produced naturally as a hormone by the pancreas to keep the body in homeostasis, then produced synthetically and injected manually to prevent hyperglycemia. About 10% of the population suffers from type 1 diabetes. The remaining 90% of diabetics have type 2 diabetes; Type 2 diabetes occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body does not properly use the insulin it produces. This type of diabetes mainly occurs in adults, and due to this factor, children are at risk of getting diabetes because it is in their genetic traits. Gestational diabetes, which is the third type of diabetes, is considered a temporary condition that occurs during pregnancy. Pregnancy is a risk factor for the mother and baby because 2 to 4% of all pregnancies carry an increased risk of developing diabetes ("Canadian Diabetes Association", 2014. p. 1). Diabetes has a great impact on an individual's life; responsibilities increase by making sure you take the correct dosage of insulin, eating the right amount of food, and making sure you get adequate exercise; although more care is needed than another individual living a life without precautions. In Canada the rate of diabetes is slowly increasing due to many other factors. According to the Canadian Diabetes Association (2014), it is estimated that of the nine million Canadians, approximately 5.4 million have pre-diabetes (p.1). Diabetes is a metabolic problem...... middle of paper... ...improves overall well-being and can help with many other health conditions. The benefits of regular physical activity: lowers blood pressure and cholesterol, reduces the risk of heart disease and stroke, burns calories to help you lose or maintain weight, increases energy for daily activities, helps you sleep better , relieves stress, strengthens the heart and improves blood circulation, strengthens muscles and bones, keeps joints flexible, improves balance to prevent falls, reduces symptoms of depression and improves quality of life (American Diabetes Association , 2013). Diabetes is known to be a metabolic disorder, which means that in a way that the body uses digested food, growth and energy. Most of the food that foolish individuals consume is broken down into glucose. Glucose is the main source of fuel for the body (National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse (NDIC), 2014).
