Governor Dayton created a new law to help Minnesota schools with a very important topic: bullying. The new Safe and Supportive Schools Act provides educators, parents and students with the tools and resources they need, such as bullying prevention and intervention. It will also help reduce absences, suspensions and dropout rates because now schools will know how to handle bullying and children will have a place to go and be safe. The bill includes a clear definition of bullying and intimidation, so it is easier for schools to identify them. The bill also listed protections for students who are more likely to be victims of bullying or harassment, such as race, color, disability. The bill will also provide training and resources on bullying for students, staff, and school volunteers; it also provides specific procedures that staff must follow when incidents of bullying are reported. It will help people who are being bullied and will also try to stop bullying. But there are many different views on this topic, some people like the Safe and Sound act because it could help schools but it could also hurt them. We don't know what will happen, but schools could use this policy but they don't need the law if it will hurt the school more than help it. People who don't support this law say it will hurt schools because everyone has to start over and learn a new method against bullying when those who already have helped. Bullying is decreasing in Minnesota and schools are getting better with the policies they have now. They argued that the proposal is unnecessary and that costly government intervention could cause more problems than it solves. Opponents argue that in its current form the legislation could ... middle of paper ... sota is being criticized for the policies it has right now because they can vary greatly from district to district. Opinion I think Minnesota needs the Safe and Supportive Act to help students feel safer at school. This law could hurt more than help schools, budgets are already tight and if we add this law we will add more if we have to pay more than $40 million a year. Who will pay if schools can't? The money schools receive should go to help improve schools and add more education, as they already have trouble paying for sports, music and books. What will happen to schools if they can't pay for it? It's scary to accept this act, other states have tried acts like this or tried to pass it and it didn't pass or work. So I don't know what to say about the safe and supportive act, it's hard to understand.
