Topic > The Armenian Genocide and the American Response

April 24, 1915 marked the beginning of the first genocide of the 20th century, the Armenian Genocide. From April to October 1918 approximately 1.8 million Armenian Turks were murdered by their fellow Turks. The leaders of this genocide were never brought to justice. The Turkish government managed to cover up the crimes, even going so far as to blackmail other countries into ignoring the actions committed by the Turkish government during the First World War. The United States is one of these countries. No recent sitting American president has yet recognized the events of 1915-1918 against the Armenian people as a genocide for fear of how this will affect the country's relations with Turkey. This fear has continued to erase the topic from American discussion. The United States has a moral responsibility to hold the Turkish government accountable for this crime against humanity, as well as to step forward and inform its citizens about the Armenian Genocide. By doing so, the cover-up will be revealed, the Turkish people will be held accountable, and, hopefully, American citizens will be one step closer to participating in ending future Holocausts, Rwanda, Bosnia, and Darfur and their cover-ups. . To get to the responsibility of the American citizen, we must first understand the events of the Armenian Genocide and its cover-up. We need to see how these events unfolded, how the trials were botched and how Turkey managed to hide their crimes. Even if the Turkish people continue to deny it, the events of 1915 were very real. Starting on April 24, 1915, thousands of prominent and wealthy Armenian men were deported or placed in detention camps (Knights of Vartan Armenian Research... half of the document... and Jihad according to Islam).
