This reflects Calvin's empowerment of the poor through “schools and libraries that would instruct the poor to use their talents to help themselves” (Gutek , 2011, p. 121). Joe's experience of growing up as an ethnic minority appears to have had a profound impact on his desire to empower the weak. Joe's desire to empower minorities also mirrors the work of Jane Addams. Addams lived during the period of massive immigration from Southern and Eastern Europe. The influx of non-Protestants created conflict with the Protestant culture of the public school system. Jane Addams sought a new solution to reach these immigrants through the creation of a community center in Chicago called Hull House (Bilton, 2006). From Hull House, Addams provided social services and education to immigrant communities. This experience helped her develop an educational philosophy that valued diversity over assimilation. Additionally, Joe experienced feelings of social isolation as the only Native American on the “A track,” composed entirely of white students. The feeling of isolation he experienced as a teenager influenced his desire to create an environment that reduces isolation and instead builds community. This parallels the worldview of Jane Addams, whose goal was to create a new vision of community
