Beauty pageants not only destroy self-esteem, but are very harmful to a child's life. Imagine it, a young girl winning her first crown. Look at the joy on his face and that of his parents. This was her first beauty pageant, she did it for the fun and thrill of being the prettiest. What happens when her parents are too “involved” with their daughters' victory? What if he lost more than he won, with thousands of dollars down the drain? As she gets older she feels less and less confident and this can lead to eating disorders and many other emotional problems. This cute young girl grows up with ideals of perfection she can never achieve, an image of what is "beautiful" that is unattainable, which can lead to emotional and psychological problems. Although some say pageants are just for fun, beauty pageants in America should be limited due to the emotional and physical stress girls are put under. There are so many trust issues that teenagers face, but when participating in pageants from a young age, these trust issues are exacerbated beyond what is normal. “Contests, especially those designed for young children; focus primarily on appearance, clothing, and perceived cuteness” (Villines). These girls, most of the time, are forced to look and act a certain way by their parents. Whether a child voluntarily participates in pageants or is forced by a parent to participate, his or her main focus is beauty and this means that the parents' focus is also on beauty. “…Some children who come in may suffer from depression or anxiety due to the feeling of being forced to do something they don't want to do…” (Crow).
