At the age of 14, I got my first daycare job. I couldn't legally work at the center because by law you had to be at least 16 years old to work in a child care facility. But I volunteered at the center for two years and later got my first paid job at La Petite Academy. During my time in these centers I worked with all age groups, from newborns to school-age children. This time gave me an idea of the quirks that all different age groups have. But there were some things that were true for all children. All children are unique in their own way, they all want to be independent to some extent, and they have all taught me something different. During my time as a teaching assistant, teachers and parents constantly told me that I was a natural teacher and that I should consider going into early childhood education. I believe that being a teacher requires certain characteristics. A good teacher must be patient, a good listener, a leader, kind, a constant learner, open-minded and much more. Teachers have as much to learn from their students as students have to learn from their teachers. To be receptive to these lessons you have to be a good listener and open to learning new things. When working with children in early childhood, patience and kindness are two characteristics that a teacher must possess. If children in that age group don't feel safe and comfortable they won't be receptive to anything. In any line of work, it's true that things don't always go as well as expected, but this is especially true in teaching. A teacher must be open-minded in these moments, must be able to improvise and keep things moving as if nothing had gone wrong. Many of these features...... middle of paper ......things, like holiday parties, for families in the classroom would also be hosted so families can get to know each other and bond. Keeping these types of family events will help create a close-knit atmosphere in the classroom, a comforting feeling that will make everyone feel safe and loved. The first years of a child's life are when most of his development takes place. Developing a child's independence and creativity is just as important as developing their language and logical skills. During this time it is the job of early childhood educators to nurture and assist in the growth of each child who enters their classroom. Teachers are cultivating young minds who will become future leaders, artists, scientists, and even future teachers. It's a difficult job but there is none more fulfilling and important than that of an early childhood educator.
