People who are hell-bent on declaring that there is absolute equality around them are ignorant or unaware of the tragic facts. Men are able to avoid responsibility for their actions quite frequently and are held to a very different standard than women. A phrase that comes to mind is the famous expression “boys will be boys”. This language reinforces the idea that it is the nature of men to be uncivilized and harmful. They are expected not to control themselves. This behavior should not be acceptable because there is no reason why men should be expected to be less mature and caring than women. In an article by Jackson Katz, The Price Women Pay for Boys Being Boys, Katz talks about a group of guys who knew their friend planned to film a girl during sex without her knowledge, but did nothing to stop him. Reflecting on this incident, she says: “They grew up immersed in a popular, pornographic culture in which the sexual degradation of women is so common as to seem insignificant. In this sense, it shouldn't surprise us that they didn't even stop to think about how humiliated she would feel” (Katz). I can't stress enough how relevant this is in every woman's life. Discrimination, harassment, sexualization and dehumanization are problems that women constantly face in their lives. Feminism is about empowering women; it's about recognizing each gender as equal. Still,
