The author, Alice Walker, shows the importance of personal identity and the meaning of one's heritage. These topics are addressed through the characterization of each character. In the story “Everyday Use,” the mother shows how their daughters are in two completely different worlds. One of her daughters, Maggie, is shy and jealous of her sister Dee and thinks her sister has had it easy. He's the type who would stay with his mother and be cut off from the outside world. Dee, on the other hand, has become more extroverted and exposed to the real, modern world. The story shows how two girls with different views on life live together and have a relationship with each other in the family. Maggie had always thought that her mother, her mother, showed Dee more love and care towards her. It is until the end of the story that we find out that Mama cares most for Maggie through the quilt that her mother gave her. Showing that even though Dee is successful and has a more modern life, Maggie herself is equally successful in her own way thanks to her love for her traditions and old things....
