The influential power behind words is often forgotten or abused, but when they are put together harmoniously; one's words have the power to change the world. Everywhere from ancient Rome to modern America, public speaking has been an art form that many have learned and used for persuasive purposes. The most successful and effective speeches often contain clear indications of the speaker's motivation, approach, and purpose. These themes are represented very dramatically in William Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, as well as the famous speech of the great Martin Luther King Jr. The speech of the great Martin Luther King Jr. Brutus at Caesar's funeral is given so that the people of Rome, for better understand why Caesar's blood was shed. “Be patient only until we have quieted the multitude, beside themselves with fear” (74). Brutus realizes that the assassination would not look good in the eyes of civilians; until explained. “Our reasons are so full of good esteem that if you, Antony, son of Caesar, would be satisfied” (76). He truly believes that what was done, should be done, for the good of Rome. Brutus begins his speech using a sentimental tone, talking about how he loved Caesar as much as everyone else present. He then goes on to explain why he conspired against a friend so dear to him. “If then that friend asks me why Brutus rose up against Caesar, this is my answer: not that I loved Caesar less, but that I loved Rome more” (79). Here Brutus begins to talk about how Rome is of the utmost importance, how Caesar's death was absolutely necessary, since his ambition would lead them all to their graves as slaves. Now Brutus seems to go in a logical direction, asking who would rather be a slave, "who is here so rude, that he would not be Roman?"(80), ... middle of paper ..... .This speech was as he says one day King: “In what will go down in history as the greatest demonstration of freedom in the history of our nation” (King 1). As you can see today, the speech worked and improved the lives of black people. This five minute speech changed the lifestyle and respect for all black men and women. It affected so many things for everyone, everywhere. They were now accepted as human beings. As they always should have been. The success of an effective and motivating public speech is undoubtedly the most undeniable way to persuade a mass of people. One person's confidence, personality and kindness can carry a nation forward. The speeches of Brutus, Antony, and Kings all had some form of effectiveness, no matter how long or short they were. The power of public speaking is a manipulative tool that can be used for better or worse, but if the motivation is pure, anything is possible.
