Why are crimes committed in our society? Introduction As a citizen living in the United States you are probably aware of the increase in violent crime occurring in many of our communities. Nationwide, law enforcement agencies made approximately 12,196,959 arrests in 2012. Of these arrests, 521,196 were for violent crimes and 1,646,212 were for property crimes (FBI. Gov., 2013). Many Americans find themselves worried about rising unemployment and the US economy. Normally, when unemployment rises, cities' profits fall because fewer people pay taxes. This will usually cause cuts to city services, including the police force. So an increase in criminal activity may not be due to fewer police officers, but rather to increased unemployment. Hard economic times usually lead to an increase in crime, but what is happening in the United States now is absolutely astonishing. Here in the United States there are many communities where it's not safe to even go out at night, sometimes in my own neighborhood it might be. You may also be one of the millions of people who lock themselves in their homes to try to keep crime away. It is becoming difficult to simply live your daily life because you are afraid of the kind of crime that occurs right outside the house where you live. The sad thing is that crime will likely become even greater as our economic conditions continue to worsen. The question is: what are the causes why so many of our citizens find themselves committing crimes in our society? Do men commit more crimes than women? The History of CrimeCrime is nothing new to our society. Abnormal social behaviors, including crime, have been attempted by people throughout history. Dating back approximately 3,700 years, it was the first attempt to control bad behavior, ... halfway through ... 79.7% were male (FBI.gov, 2013). Females represented 43.1%. of all people arrested for burglary and theft crimes in 2012 (FBI.gov, 2013). Of those arrested for aggravated assault in 2012, 22.9% were women (FBI.gov, 2013).
