Lester Joseph Gillis also known as Baby Face Nelson was a notorious bank robber and murderer. Nelson was born on December 6, 1908 in Chicago. His parents emigrated from Belgium, while his father worked in the cattle pen and his mother gave French lessons to schoolchildren. Because Nelson's parents were always busy with work, they often left their children unattended, leaving Nelson and his brother to wander Chicago's Westside alone without their parents supervising them. Nelson's criminal life can be traced back to his early adolescence, by the age of 13 he was stealing car tires, running stills, bootlegging and armed robbery (Federal Bureau Of Investigation). Some of the major theories that can prove the reason that led Baby Face Nelson to enter the criminal life can be linked to social structure theory, ecological theory, rational choice theory, and social learning theory. Nelson's parents were just like any other parents but the fact that they were both busy working to keep themselves alive made it easy for their children to be exposed to crime in Chicago. At the same time, the city of Chicago is guilty of not providing a safe place for people to grow up and not expose themselves to a life of crime. At the same time Nelson did not have the opportunity to learn the values of life as his parents were not very present and when he was sent to an orphanage at the age of thirteen it did not help him learn what is right and wrong. During Baby Face Nelson's life he committed more than four bank robberies and although there is no clear number of how many people Baby Face Nelson killed, he killed 5 FBI agents during his life of crime. Nelson was sent to a boy's house when he was thirteen for theft and was released two years later but sent to the ground during the trial. Nelson was shot seventeen. During the firefight Nelson managed to escape but died the following day from his wounds. Baby Face Nelson's past determined what he would do for the rest of his life, he chose to go into a life of crime, society did not help stop him from continuing his life, his neighborhood was full of crime which made him do Nelson made poor choices about how to live his life.Works CitedBiography.com.
