Typrite is a relatively small family-run limited company based in Warrenpoint, Co. Down. It was founded in 1985 and is involved in manufacturing and distributing a wide range of printing consumables, such as ink cartridges, laser toner cartridges, thermal transfer fax rolls, etc. It sells mainly to businesses, although it sells directly to the public. manufacturing facility in Warrenpoint. In 2008 Typerite exports its products to 33 countries around the world. In the 1990s Typerite employed over 100 workers as the work involved in the manufacturing process was manual in nature and labor intensive. Now, thanks to technological advances in the industry, they employ 30 people. Staff members include; Gary Barlow who is the owner and acts as CEO, his wife and co-owner Florence Barlow who is company secretary, their daughter Cathy Gamble who looks after the sales and marketing of the company, Fiona Boyle who is Office Manager, Jim Coglan who is Purchasing Manager and Tracey Tsang who is Marketing Manager. The personnel reminder are the production supervisors and production personnel. For the purpose of this assignment I will review and evaluate the structure and design of Typerite Ltd. Typrite as well as any organization is made up of certain parts or departments i.e. Sales and Marketing Department, Administration Department, Purchasing Department and Production Department. These groupings can be described as the division of labor, based on specialization, using the same set of resources, or sharing the skills of staff members as described in (Mullins). These parts are interdependent on each other and therefore some sort of cooperation is necessary for the organization to exist and function as a whole. For this there needs to be some sort of deliberate structural system. The structure allows you to clearly assign different functions and processes to different departments and employees. “Structure is the pattern of relationships between positions in organizations and between organizational members. The structure makes possible the application of the management process and creates a structure of order and command through which the activities of the organization can be planned, organized, directed and controlled.” (Mullins)Organizations are structured in various ways, depending on many aspects including size, objectives, culture and management style. It is important to consider these aspects as they influence the design and structure of the company.
