Sport has been a favorite pastime for centuries, and medications, steroids, performance-enhancing drugs, and regular street drugs have been used for decades. In many locker rooms the motto is “if you don't cheat, you don't try” (Schafer). Over the past few decades, many have seen the need to drug test athletes to maintain the integrity of the sport. Athletes who take drug tests have faced many lawsuits and have even gone to the US Supreme Court many times because some believe drug testing is an invasion of their privacy. However, drugs increased entertainment while watching sports, but they also decreased sportsmanship and integrity. Drug testing is a necessary deterrent in all sports to decrease the number of unethical players and at the same time increase the integrity of a given sport. We must first ask ourselves: why do young aspiring athletes use drugs? Young aspiring athletes use drugs because they feel it's the only way to get to the big leagues. Dr. Michael Schafer, an orthopedic surgeon, reports that eighty percent of all athletes believe that drugs are the only way to become a professional athlete. While 77% of athletes are forced to use drugs to advance their careers, reports the Taylor Hooten Foundation. Many young athletes see many professionals like Barry Bonds, Brandon Browner or Lance Armstrong as role models and will do anything to play like them. In fact, that's how sixty percent of them feel (Schafer). When Bonds, Browner or Armstrong are suspended for drug abuse, it doesn't discourage young athletes, but pushes them to take drugs and not get caught. This ambition often comes at a cost. Drug abuse is a pervasive epidemic affecting high school athletes across the University... middle of the paper... who has the best pharmacist." Yes, drug tests cost money. It can cost up at $30 per athlete, reports Ryan Grim. However, the National Institute of Health reports that drug abuse costs $524 billion a year. You can get thirty dollars back, but you can never get your life back , a common misconception is that drug testing discourages innocent students. However, this is not true because the Department of Education reports that there have been no reports of inconsistencies in participation in extracurricular activities. These athletes will be our future leaders imperative to teach these athletes the importance of being conscientious and clean, it is not a justified reason why you should have unnatural abilities compared to others your physical abilities and not through drugs.
