Age Differencesso How do age differences affect communication in the workplace? For the first time in history, there are four generations of people working side by side in the workplace. Think about your workplace and the different people who work there. Sometimes it's difficult to get your point across to someone of a different age generation. This especially becomes a problem in the supervisor-employee relationship. To communicate effectively with your peers, you need to understand the context in which they see the world. This issue is a real concern for managers. A Center for Generational Studies was also created. • Differences in attitudes and values Each generation is a product of the times in which it comes of age. Each generation will have its own beliefs and ideas as is the case with culture. According to Robert Wendover, chief executive of the CGS, "There's just a natural separation between the assumptions that they [young people] make about society, about values, about right and wrong and about all sorts of things that we, for the most part of cases, we have grown to take for granted simply because we have lived with them for so long." No generation belief is right or wrong, however there are differences between generations that need to be recognized and treated accordingly. • Stereotypes I will list some general characteristics of the people who belong to each of these generations. However, be careful not to stereotype and make certain assumptions about an individual because of their age. Many members of the younger generations have moved away from home in hopes of getting rid of their parents, only to find that they will work with them. To the younger ones w...... middle of paper ......influence whether the message sent and the message received are the same thing. These screens are made up of the personal factors each person brings to the conversation, such as gender, culture, and age differences, as discussed above. The extent to which these screens are open or closed significantly affects both the messages sent and received. Keeping the above mentioned points in mind when communicating with colleagues of different age groups; speaking and listening; internal conflict can be significantly reduced. So far the role of the receiver has not been emphasized. However, their role is equally important for the communication process. In the next clip you'll see an example of a sender's message not being interpreted correctly by the intended recipient, and Adrienne will later explain more details about the recipient's role.
