Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, otherwise known as ADHD, is the most common psychiatric condition affecting 9.5% of school-age children in the United States (intuniv, 2013 ). If the disorder is left untreated, it will cause side effects and long-term difficulties for the individual as an adult. Adults suffering from this condition face various adversities in everyday life, such as impulsive behavior, low self-esteem and poor work performance. People are unaware of the complications that arise from ADHD in adults. Not knowing the symptoms of the disease can cause people to be unsympathetic when interacting with someone with the disorder. First, there are two different types of ADHD. An individual may be diagnosed with hyperactivity or impulsivity. Those with hyperactivity are unable to sit still, talk excessively, and always act as if they are “on the move” (intuniv, 2013). If you are diagnosed with a symptom of impulsivity, you have difficulty waiting for others and interrupt them regularly. These symptoms make you think of an unruly child and are not the ones that make you think of an illness. This disorder can go unnoticed for quite some time and this can cause unnecessary stress in an individual's daily life. When people think of a child diagnosed with ADHD, they think of a wild child bouncing off the walls without control, but this is not always the case. Some children diagnosed with this disorder may be quiet and are perceived as daydreamers. It is the daydreamers who may go undiagnosed longer because their symptoms are not as destructive to the people around them. At a young age, symptoms already begin to appear.
