Perhaps it is important to note that the term “ancient Roman culture” is usually used to refer to the culture of the Roman Republic which later became the Roman Empire. The empire covered a larger area, ranging from Morocco and the Scottish Lowlands to the Euphrates (O'Sullivan, 2011). This article seeks to dispel the idea that understanding culture is not as simple as describing it based on common behaviors. It will address various key aspects of ancient Roman culture, such as its social structure, political structure, economic structure, as well as how it was influenced by its social contract over time. The social structure of the culture of ancient RomeThe social culture The structure of ancient Rome was mainly based on some key characteristics, such as heredity, citizenship, wealth, freedom and property. Women's social status was defined by that of their husband or father and they were expected to take care of the home. In this culture, slaves, mostly prisoners of war, were considered part of the social order, although they were the basis of the system. The social structure was also composed of upper-class citizens known as patricians. . They had their own special class because they had extra money to have a high education. Plebeians were poor, low-class citizens, but they were somewhat richer than slaves. However, plebeians had numerous restrictions compared to patricians and had a more difficult life in ancient Rome. Some economic analysts have considered the economic structure of the ancient Romans to be a market economy. However, due to the effects of the social contract, much has changed, considering the fact that the governance structure of ancient Rome did not respect human rights, especially those of the poor and slaves (Erskine, 2009).
