Topic > A comparison of the concepts of morality and immorality

Even the most moral person in the world would have to do unjust things if he knew that he could never be caught, because he has the opportunity to get something without repercussions. People in society would see a fool if they knew that someone had the ability to do something beneficial towards themselves without the possibility of getting into trouble and not pursuing it. People do not believe that acting morally benefits the individual, but only the status of a moral person; when the opportunity presents itself, people will choose to act immorally because they feel it advances them beyond their current state. One does not aspire to true morality, but instead attempts to be perceived as a moral person, to gain status in society, through unjust acts. This shows that people truly see morality not as an intrinsic good, but rather as an instrumental good, used to acquire more material goods and resources. People see the choice to act morally as a nuisance, not because it is their first choice of action. People will choose the action that benefits them rather than receiving no benefit, unless they feel they could be caught or suffer injustice in the future and would consequently put them in a worse situation in the long term.
