Lauren Bacall once said, “A man's illness is his private territory, and no matter how much he loves you and how close you are to him, you remain an outsider. You are healthy." This quote highlights the fact that no one knows exactly what someone with an incurable disease is going through. We are all outsiders. So, who is to say, for example, that doctor-assisted suicide should be illegal? If a person has the constitutional right to live, then he should have the right to choose to die on his own terms. Furthermore, if a terminally ill person chooses to opt for assisted suicide, the potential for saving vital organs is much greater when the disease begins to take hold the upper hand, many patients become too ill to carry out daily activities on their own but, with assisted suicide, the patient can die with dignity knowing that they have saved themselves and their family time, money and even pain is a subject of discussion among many groups, it is necessary to also take a look at the alternatives offered. As the definition states, assisted suicide is the suicide of a patient suffering from an incurable disease. Assisted suicide was created to help a terminally ill patient with his or her suicidal intentions (Webster, 2011) and to give the patient the opportunity to die on his or her own terms. Euthanasia also plays a key role in assisted suicide. Euthanasia must be requested by a conscious patient suffering from an irreversible disorder that induces physical and/or psychological suffering, without hope of improvement or rapid spontaneous death; the request for euthanasia must be written by the patient or his representative who has no interest in the patient's death. Modern medicine has made many advances in recent years but, unfortunately, it cannot take... middle of paper... to have to deal with them. Everyone should have the ability to choose what they want to do with their life. Assisted suicide would give them this option. Works CitedComa Science Group. (2008).
