Topic > Hamlet's Revenge Tragedy Analysis - 1057

Unlike most revenge tragedies, there is more than one character seeking revenge in Hamlet. Laertes, like Hamlet, faces the death of his father, Polonius. Rather than be slow to act in dealing with his father's death, Laertes is quick to accuse the first person who seems guilty. This makes Laertes more like a typical revenge tragedy character. These clear differences make it appear to the reader that Hamlet is not conforming to these tendencies. Laertes is rather zany and is much less dynamic as a character. Part of Hamlet's popularity may stem from his dynamic character and more recognizable qualities. Laertes is intent on killing Claudius at one moment, then is quickly outsmarted by Claudius and is prepared to kill Hamlet instead. Intelligence versus courage seems to be the theme between these two opposing characters. Laertes without intelligence is quicker to act on his revenge making him brave but almost opposite to that of Hamlet
