According to the article “Are books better than movies?”, “Movies can bring entire worlds to life before our eyes, make characters come alive, breathe living blood, but books make you experience everything” (“Are books better than movies?”). Very often book lovers are dissatisfied with the film adaptation of their favorite book. No doubt there have been great films based on the books, but that is no substitute for reading the actual novel. Reading books is better than watching a movie. This is for the best because the film often tends to misinterpret information, which changes the plot and lacks sufficient character development. One of the many famous film adaptations is based on the teen novel series The Twilight Saga. Written by Stephanie Meyer, it was a huge success. The series is about a male vampire (Edward Cullen) and a human female (Isabella Swan) who fall in love and struggle to maintain their relationship. Teenagers ran out, grabbed books from the press, and staked out theaters the first weekend it came out. The first weekend the film was released in theaters it grossed over $69,637,740. It also ranked as the number one film out of 3,419 across America ("Twilight (2008) - Box Office Mojo."). In the film versions, the director seems to overlook material that the reader finds vital to the plot. In the first Twilight book, when Edward and Bella get out of the car he doesn't touch her because he doesn't want to risk losing control (Meyer). In the film, directed by Catherine Hardwicke, he puts his arm around Bella and says he was going to hell anyway (Hardwicke). When the director did this he changed the plot because in the book none of the other characters knew that Edward and Bella were talking. Then suddenly Edward and Bella have...... middle of paper ...... the chance to increase their vocabulary and knowledge. Movies are not the same as books because they lack the following criteria. They don't have as much character analysis as the book does, nor do they stick to the plot of the book. Directors tend to take their creative liberties too far and start changing the plot and creating new images of the story. Readers would love to see a great novel come to life, but keep it as she wrote it. “Are books better than movies?” Theguardian.com. Guardian News and Media, 6 November 2013.
