Rhetoric in Politics: Barack Obama's Inaugural SpeechBarack Obama's inaugural speech was delivered to the American public to express the president's goals for his next term. This speech would be President Obama's second as he is currently in his second presidential term. The purpose of this speech was to share with the audience the vision he had for his next term, what his future ideas were and the rights we Americans have. Through the use of vivid examples, anecdotes and facts, the President demonstrated the challenges facing our current generation and the duty we have to our country and our fellow citizens: to work for a better tomorrow. By providing a comprehensive approach to the issue at hand, it creates a strong and logical argument that could potentially provide a means to our country's future success. Obama believes that for a country to be successful, its people must work together in unison so that the founding principles on which our country was founded can continue to be evident. “This is the task of our generation: to make these words, these rights, these values – of Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness – real for every American. “He believes there are two ways to determine the course of our country: by defending our values and by supporting them. Obama deploys a wide range of rhetorical strategies to emphasize the issue of unity and dignity that Americans should keep highlighted in his inaugural address; through the use of anecdotes he illustrated the social movements that have shaped our country, he also demonstrated with examples the effect that unity can have on the success of generations to come, embracing various forms of pathos that reach emotion and life. ..... middle of the paper ...... persuasion in his speech: anecdotes, rhetorical strategies and calls to action. By having a progressive framework, starting first from the origins on which our country was founded, then adopting rhetorical strategies that illuminate current issues in America, and finally issuing calls to action for America to participate. After the speech I understood why as Americans we needed to work for a better nation since our nation was based on unity and equality, not to mention progress. Once again, Obama is widely recognized as one of the most persuasive and elaborate speakers of all time, and this has been proven once again.
