Founded in 1263 by John de Balliol. Sister College – St John's College, Cambridge. Men and Women – Undergraduates 387 Postgraduates 327.Balliol is one of Oxford's oldest and largest colleges with approximately 327 graduates and 387 undergraduates. It has recently become the most popular, with more applications than any other in the university. Balliol is located right in the heart of the city, on its original site, with a lease dating back to the year of foundation, 1263. A student coup in the 1960s attempted to rename the college the "People's Republic of Balliol" and from it then gained a reputation as the most politically active university with the particularly vocal liberal left. Progressive social reform Balliol is rightly proud of a reputation for placing high academic achievement above social class - a result of enormous and radical efforts in the 19th century to shake up entrenched attitudes within the university. Balliol's tutors helped found the Workingmen's Educational Association and became associated with progressive social reform that expanded educational opportunities for common men. It was the first college to admit commoners and the first to include black students. Women were able to attend classes as early as 1884 as long as "someone senior" accompanied them. Most formal ceremonies have been put aside, making Balliol one of the most liberal and open colleges in Oxford. However, the pleasures of formal dining were reintroduced in 2007 after a long absence deemed "old and dogmatic". It is now one of Oxford's most diverse institutions, with a high proportion of international students. These values reflect some of those upheld by her husband and... middle of paper... a classic style and renewed by Waterhouse in 1877. First men's college to elect a woman. Women were accepted into Balliol in 1979, which seems a little late for such a forward-thinking college, however it was the first all-male college to elect a woman as a fellow and tutor in 1973. The student body is vibrant, with clubs and societies able to satisfy every request, supported by a JCR that boasts the largest budget in Oxford. The drama is particularly strong with a dedicated theater studio. Both physical and bar sports are practiced with great passion. All first and third years can be accommodated on site, whilst many, but not all, second years are accommodated at Jowett Walk, located close to the college sports field, less than 5 minutes' walk away. They are all studio rooms equipped with internet connection. Self-catering facilities are provided for students who do not wish to dine in the hall.
