When she won that award she said, “In my mind, I see a line. And beyond that line, I see green fields, and lovely flowers, and beautiful white women with their arms stretched out towards me beyond that line, but I can't get there any way. I can't get past that line. And let me tell you something. The only thing that separates women of color from everyone else is opportunity. You can't win an Emmy for roles that just aren't there." Since opportunities are the starting point for any exposure to occur, there needs to be more complex, less sexualized, and versatile roles so that African American women do not take on roles that negatively describe who they see.
