The Messenger of the Lord: The Prophetic Ministry of Ellen G. White was written by Herbert Edgar Douglass and published in 1988. Herbert E. Douglass is a Seventh-Theologian Adventist who has written commentaries for five books and is also part of the staff that edited the Seventh-day Adventist Bible Commentary. Douglass' book is a comprehensive treatment of how Ellen White's prophetic gift worked in her life and ministry. This book was written with two purposes in mind: (1) to provide Seventh-day Adventists with a fresh look at the life and testimony of Ellen G. White, and (2) to provide reference material for college and seminary courses on the subject of the gift of prophecy, especially as manifested in the life and ministry of this inspired messenger of God. The Messenger of the Lord: The Prophetic Ministry of Ellen G. White was divided into eight sections; Chapters 1 through 3, titled God's Communication System, briefly explore the biblical teaching on how God revealed the "good news" (the gospel) of salvation to men and women. God is revealed through Jesus Christ, the Revelator. The Holy Spirit transmits, through the “gift of prophecy,” the truth revealed in Jesus. Chapters 4 through 12 entitled The Real Ellen White focus first on Ellen Harmon's childhood and adolescent experiences. Then, her role as Mrs. Ellen G. White, wife, mother, neighbor, soul winner, and public personality, will examine her life from her writings and from the perspective of those who knew her best. Her fascinating fusion of Victorian woman and robust American pioneer will be studied. The Listening Messenger, which is the title of chapters 13 through 16, will look at how the prophetic gift worked in Ellen White's ministry. Historical context... middle of paper... prophet, received instructions from God. Ellen White's ministry and the emergence of the Seventh-day Adventist Church are inseparable. Trying to understand one without the other would make them incomprehensible and unobtainable. This book was written to give the reader an insight into the life of prophetess Ellen G. White and especially her revelation with God. This book also helps the reader understand their own personal desire for communication with the creator (God). The Messenger of the Lord is a well-written book as it has opened up avenues of thought that allow for a clearer understanding of who God is and His ever-increasing love for human beings. Chapters 1 through 3 are favorites of the entire book, primarily because they contain revealing information about how God reveals himself and the gospel of salvation to men and women. The Messenger of the Lord is a must read.
