Topic > The Importance of Dress Codes in School Uniforms

Students often want to stay up to date on the latest fashion trends and brands, which can get even more expensive. According to a 2013 national survey of 517 U.S. school leaders, 94 percent of respondents believed that "a major benefit to parents is that school uniforms are more affordable than regular clothing" and 77 percent estimated the cost average annual school uniforms per child at $150 or less (National Association, 2013). The average annual cost of uniforms per child is almost the same amount of money parents spend on a child's back-to-school wardrobe. Even though the cost of both may seem almost the same, many people don't take into consideration that as the seasons change, the styles also change. Ultimately, this means that parents will reluctantly shell out even more money to meet their children's wardrobe needs. Uniforms, on the other hand, allow students to wear the same outfit all year round. In the magazine "Parenting" an article reports the data received from a survey conducted on 1,000 mothers. Based on the survey, nearly 60% of moms say clothing will be their biggest back-to-school expense this year. On average, families expect to spend $131 per child on back-to-school clothing (Emmons). Therefore, after looking at the big picture, it is clear that school uniforms are more convenient for parents than purchasing ones for each child.
