The assignment was to compose a long essay discussing the effectiveness of one essay over another using how the author uses rhetorical appeals as evidence. Michelle Obama's “Bowie State University Commencement” speech conveyed the message that people should value education and also enrich the lives of others with knowledge. However, Stephanie Owen and Isabel Sawhill present the essay “Should Everyone Go to College? The essay provides numerous statistics based on arguments about whether college is the right decision for everyone and which majors have negative financial repercussions. Obama's use of rhetorical appeals was much stronger and more persuasive in arguing that we should value education rather than Owen and Sawhill saying college is not the right decision for everyone. While composing this essay I created a table dividing the two and noting how each used rhetorical appeals, then I began writing. After receiving my graded paper and reviewing my peer-reviewed paper, I corrected comma splices, clarified topic sentences, and also corrected grammar
