“I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” This is of course the Pledge of Allegiance, which kids must repeat most, if not all, school days. However, we are a divided nation and there is no freedom and justice for all. Yes, I'm talking about gay rights. It's controversial, it's hotly debated even though it's not necessary, it's unfair. Gays and lesbians should be able to marry, regardless of what state they live in. The civil problem with not allowing gays to marry is that, in short, it is unfair. They should be able to show their love in public like any other couple, and it should be able to be documented in the form of a legal marriage. If people weren't allowed to marry heterosexually, and gays were allowed to marry, they would be mad, depressed, and feel a little betrayed, among other things. They wouldn't even be sure if their relationship was valid at that time, stated by this representative of the gay community "(they) want the right to legally marry [and] honor their relationship in the best way our society has to offer.. ." ( ProCon 1) Then they also get to reach a milestone in their life that everyone dreams of, regardless of sexual orientation. Allowing gay marriage can also help reduce divorce rates in places where it is legal. Massachusetts' divorce rate decreased by 21 percent between 2003 and 2008, posting the lowest divorce rate in 2008. It was the first state in the United States to legalize gay marriage, in 2003. Alaska, d On the other hand, he had a 17.2 percent increase in the divorce rate after amending the state constitution to ban gay marriage in 1998. Furthermore, t...... half of the document ......However If this were the case, sterile females and sterile males would not be able to marry, nor would older women who have passed menopause. Using this same twisted logic, couples would likely not be allowed to marry unless they intended to have children soon after. See how weird and unfair that is? Another counter to this argument is that gay or lesbian couples can still raise a real family, with millions of adoptable or trustworthy children without parents to care for them. The point is that no one can deny any rights to a group of people. In the great words of rapper Macklemore, “Everyone else is more comfortable being voiceless, rather than fighting for human beings whose rights have been stolen. I may not be the same, but that doesn't matter, no freedom until we're the same, (damn), right, I support that. (Mertrolyrics.com 1)
