Ice Scream Imagine that you and a group of your friends are walking through a coastal community in the dead of summer. As time passed, the heat became suffocating, my neck and face burned, and my mouth was filled with the taste of residual salt. As beads of sweat roll down your forehead, you turn to the others in your group and realize that they are equally burned. When it seems like there is no help, you suddenly hear the familiar chime of an ice cream truck in the distance. In an effort to get some sort of relief from the heat, you signal to the driver and quickly collect enough money for each member of your group to make a purchase. Overjoyed, everyone rejoice in the cold truce. The exchange is apparently innocent. But unknowingly, you and your friends have simply statistically killed someone. In 2007, numerous studies conducted across the country reported a strong correlation between ice cream sales and homicide rates. The question is: what is causing such a dark trend? Is it sugar's natural ability to turn seemingly well-tempered individuals into mindless killing machines? Is it a compilation of the little injustices and aggravating nuances of the ice cream buying process? Or is it simply because killers tend to have a sweet tooth? In the realm of pseudo-science and psychological sociology, all of the above-mentioned causes are logical. Reasonably speaking, sugar has the potential to cause violent outbursts in the typical human being. It has been well documented that sugar increases blood pressure by causing the release of insulin from the pancreas. Insulin has an inflammatory effect on all parts of the body it comes into contact with, including the lining of blood vessels. When the blo lining...... middle of paper...... On the other hand, there's always the possibility that killers simply have a sweet tooth. But without any hard evidence, we can't determine which came first. Has ice cream slowly created the killer instinct that afflicts some human beings over time? Or did bloodthirsty humans develop a soft side that required comfort after slaughtering innocent civilians? With that said, now think back to the coastal community you and your friends were visiting earlier. The sun hits you as hard as before, the heat is just as suffocating and you are still all burned. Once again the chime of the ice cream truck can be heard in the distance. Now you have some options. You can report it and once again indirectly kill someone unknown to you or you can let it pass and do your good deed for the day. The choice is yours.
