To study and better understand society, it is essential to look at the most important institutions. Institutions are structures of relationships, obligations, roles and functions. They are social concepts and practices, but they also involve cognitive structures (Luton, personal communication, November 10, 2008). Education is one of the most important social institutions on which society is built. Therefore, if there are problems regarding this key sector of society, serious unrest and even destruction of society results. In today's culture, media is a major factor influencing students' education. In addition to the many benefits the media provides that improve the way education is delivered, it has unfortunately also opened a wide door to abuse through bullying. The CBC news article: Amanda Todd's anti-bullying legacy, 1 year later (2013), recalls Amanda Todd's history of bullying that tragically led her to take her own life. The facts and information presented in this article reveal that exposure to social media is a common ground for the escalation of bullying. The article also goes on to discuss the movements that have been put in place to create a safer school environment. Furthermore, when an important institution like education fails to fulfill its vital function, it becomes a larger issue that impacts society as a whole. It is useful to examine how (cyber) bullying on social media impacts education alongside concern for the ethical use of technology/media. Social Problem Bullying through media is the priority social issue highlighted in this article. Despite the endless opportunities and access that technology can provide for learning, it has also become a vehicle for cyberbullying, a thriving form of adolescent social cruelty (Hoff & Mitchell, 2008). Cy......half of the paper......were questions about why and how cyberbullying affects education. The questionnaire method would also be suitable to further investigate this issue as specific questions can be formulated for carefully selected individuals. The questions would be based on how individuals perceive bullying, cyberbullying and media use. This would be done with simulated scenarios, as well as specific questions about school, behavior, identity, physical and emotional support. The secondary analysis would consist of both qualitative and quantitative approaches, while the questionnaire method would rely exclusively on the quantitative approach. The subset of the population sampled for this study would be middle and high school students. It has been shown that adolescents and teenagers are the group most affected by cyberbullying (Bullying Statistic, 2013).
