At 1:15pm on Saturday afternoon, I'm currently hanging out at the student gaming center with the pool tables and a row of arcades in front of me. At least nine to twelve players are gathered around two arcade game machines in front of me. The two most popular ones that are of interest are the Street Fighter 3rd Strike and Marvel vs Capcom 2 machines. Gamers are heavily immersed in watching the players and cheering them on. I'm watching four players playing on two separate machines. The two players who are on MVC2 are wearing both hooded jackets and baggy jeans with tennis shoes. Looks like they've been here a while. Backpacks are on the side of the cars or casually laid out next to them on the ground, and some half-eaten snacks can be seen on nearby tables. A quick look around allowed me to admire the surroundings. There are three pool table games in sessions occupied by two or four players per table. Three girls are having drinks at the table directly adjacent to my stool across the room. My position is close enough to the arcade machines that I can easily see the players and notice everything that's going on, and far enough away that I remain hidden and unsuspected while I'm recording the scene. I'm recording with my Nokia N95 with Carl Zeiss optics, 5 mega pixel lens and voice amplifier with creative sounds. I'm wearing a zip-up hooded jacket and baggy cargo pants with a pair of vans that allow me to blend in as easily as a regular spectator. Immediately afterwards there are at least six or seven spectators for the four players. Additionally, at ten minute intervals, the losers take turns going out with one of the players lining up to be the winner's new challenger. The guys seem to be much louder and more animated on the MVC2... mid-card... game, he still dominates his opponent in games. The players who were losing to him are very agitated, as noted due to their loud cursing and intense vulgarity that is used directly and indirectly towards said game and the player who is winning. After the boy's fourth victory, everyone dispersed and while half the audience patted the winner on the back, many players left muttering swear words under their breath, obviously unhappy with the event that had happened. The first interview I conducted was with the player who was on the street. Fighter 3rd Strike Machine where I asked him if he could take a few minutes to answer some questions for a research study I was conducting. The interview was done at one of the dining tables located right outside the student center, near the food stands. The interview time was around Saturday 17:00.
