The work was written in 1953 about the Salem witch trials that occurred in the late 1600s. Arthur did careful research on the events that happened and was able to represent them in his own words. About 40 years later, a film was created about Arthur's work, directed by Nicholas Hytner. Although both representations had some main characteristics of each other, there were also some important differences. Both Miller and Hytner agreed on some things for The Crucible, but they also disagreed on others. For example, Miller does not portray Abigail Williams as the leader of the girl group, but more as an equal. In Hytner's portrayal of Abby, he makes her the "leader" of the group, and each girl does what she does.
