“Sailing in the Bahamas is a dream come true, right?” (Stevenson 1). Unfortunately, for Rachel, the protagonist of the novel A Thousand Shades of Blue by Robin Stevenson, the reality is very different. She finds herself trapped on a boat with her dysfunctional family, as she struggles to live a life free from her parents' wars. When he discovers something that threatens to destroy his family, what follows leaves a mark on an already vivid image of his character. Rachel, in Stevenson's A Thousand Shades of Blue, displays characteristics of recklessness, dishonesty and compassion. Rachel's recklessness is made evident in the novel. An example of his reckless behavior can be seen through his attitude. For example, the inappropriate use of foul language when talking to his parents clearly defines his indiscipline. He further displays this trait by constantly disobeying his parents and sneaking out at night to meet friends. On top of that, while sneaking out, despite Rachel only being sixteen, she illegally drinks alcoholic beverages and smokes...
