It is difficult to single out the Sans-Culottes as they are a huge group representing the common people, but it is clear that many if not most of the resulting deaths were from by the frequent arrests and accusations made by the Sans-Culottes. The Sans-Culottes set out with good intentions. They were described as hardworking and loyal. Their main demands were not excessive. They wanted ceilings on bread prices, laws against hoarders, and a levée en masse. As Colin Jones said, the French Revolution and the Terror were the shocking result of people with good intentions turning bad. “What was both terrifying and disappointing about the Terror of 1793-4 was the aura of casualness that hovered over the violence it provoked, even when it was conducted by individuals of impeccable Latin education and high moral principles.” Although the sans-culottes' education was by no means the best, they were proud of themselves and their morals and considered themselves the opposite of dishonest and corrupt politicians.
