Topic > Themes in The Blind Assassin by Iris Chase Griffen

The story weaves in and out of each of the three narratives and simultaneously between reality and fantasy. One moment the story will take place in the modern present and the next moment it will take place in another dimension of space on a fantasy planet called Zycron. The story is told by the sole survivor of the once wealthy and powerful Canadian family, Iris Chase Griffen, who recounts past events through a personal memoir. She attempts to chronicle her family's past, focusing on her arranged husband and the death of her sister Laura Chase. Iris begins her narrative during the historical period of the two world wars and the Depression era in the late nineteenth century, providing the foundation for the second narrative. Writing from her personal record, Iris connects the family history of both the Chase and Griffen families, while attempting to unravel the causes and events that led to her sister Laura's suicide. The second story we are given is supposedly written by Laura Chase and published after her death by her sister Iris. This novel within a novel is called "The Blind Assassin," and it is the story of two anonymous lovers, a high-class woman and a young fugitive who meet secretly in these squalid back rooms. The third narrative is a science fiction tale woven into the novel within a novel, told by the anonymous man while in side rooms, about a murderer and a crippled girl in this fairytale town of Sakiel Norm on the planet Zycron. Along with all the different narratives, there are numerous local newspaper and magazine articles scattered throughout the chapters of Iris' personal memoirs. A major twist occurs towards the end of the novel, when readers discover that Iris is actually the author of the short story, "Blind Assassin".”
