The negative attitude Americans have toward these countries is no accident. Recently, the CIA announced its involvement in Operation Ajax, an incident that led to the metaphorical isolation of Iran in 1954. Details are always important. Essentially Iran, under the orders of then Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh, was attempting to nationalize an oil industry that the British had helped build following their “involvement” in Iranian politics after the First World War. Mosaddegh intended to control the British oil company that had access to Iranian oil reserves, and in the nick of time, Britain and the United States joined together to boycott Iranian oil. To gain the support of its citizens, the United States declared Iran a communist country. Meanwhile, the relatively new CIA has moved General Zahedi, a former World War II war criminal, to the new position of Prime Minister (Ghosh).
