The mass murder of European Jews was purposely planned by Adolf Hitler before the wars started because there were already extermination camps being prepared, Hitler was mulling over more ways to execute all the Jews, and he took the Jewish leaders away from their communities so they had no power or say in what would happen. Today there are some questions about the Holocaust that people can't answer. Many people have their own opinions about the war and whether it influenced the serious reasons for killing all the Jews. Some questions people asked were whether the Holocaust was intentional by Adolf Hitler. Intentionalism is when you do something on purpose or when you want to harm something or someone; it's intentional. “Moreover, some functionalist theories tend to normalize Nazism by suggesting that its leaders engaged in the most extreme criminal behavior” (Wistich 223). Some believe that the Holocaust was not simply the result of directives from Berlin but of an interaction between the center and an increasingly radicalized periphery. “The first concentration camps in Germany were established soon after Hitler's appointment as chancellor in January 1933” (Concentration Camps). In some governments, such as Germany, the chancellor is the prime minister of state. Some concentration camps were under construction and others had already been built before the start of World War II. During the war, the number of camps in Germany increased rapidly. “Conrad Gröber, Archbishop of Freiburg, informed the people on June 14, 1932 of the massacres of Jews perpetrated by the Einsatzgruppenin in Russia” (Wistich 130). That said with evidence from the authorities, the German authorities created and conducted approximately 20,000 camps between 1933 and 1945. Functionalists argue that the Holocaust did not begin until 1942 following the failure of Nazi military losses in Russia. In 1943, German soldiers began entering concentration camps to help kill Jews and to keep watch. People in countries who were not in contact with any Jews did not know what was happening or what to believe whether or not Jews were being killed.
