Fire Station“How is it that one match can start a forest fire, but it takes an entire box of matches to start a campfire?” The fire at the station started on Wednesday 26 August 2009 at approximately 5pm. 3:30pm in the Los Angeles River Ranger District/Angeles National Forest, burning over 250 square miles equivalent to 160,577 acres. This fire claimed the lives of 2 Los Angeles County firefighters. Even though the station fire was controlled using a unified command with experienced personnel, were the number of resources assigned, level of officer training, and response times adequate for such a large and devastating ground fire? On Wednesday, August 29 the fire was first reported around 3.20pm by a report to the Angeles Crest Ranger Station, shortly after the Los Angeles County Fire Department received an emergency report at 3.22pm a forest fire off Angeles Crest Highway near mile marker 29. Initial dimensions from ANF equipment was “Three Areas Operating” at 3:31 p.m. By 3.36pm the fire was growing and was reported in 10 areas of dense bushland with a rapid rate of spread. The subsequent condition report provided by the BC6 Los Angeles County Fire Department indicated 25-30 areas with minimal active flames. The unified command was established on August 27 at 1.40 pm. The station fire continued to grow over the next three days heading in a northeasterly direction. This fire was caused by fuel topography and weather conditions, creating rapid fire spread with heavy spotting. On August 29, the fire was approaching Los Angeles County CDC Camp 16 toward Mount Gleason Road, approximately 8 miles away from Camp 16.
