The government should phase out incandescent lighting given the benefits of new alternatives. Right now, compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) are at the heart of this change and will be used as an example. First, CFLs on the market have better lighting quality than incandescent bulbs in previous years. Although quality is not the main focus of the change, it signals higher development and availability for application to the general public. Popular Mechanics, in May 2007, designed a study comparing an incandescent light to seven different CFLs. In a double-blind study, people evaluated the effect of light on the colors of objects, faces and reading material. The author concluded that their results are “quite a shock” because “when it comes to the overall quality of light… produce[d] better light.” (CITE http://www.popularmechanics.com/home_journal/how_to/ 4215199.html?page=9) Within their study, the most important factor that impressed the judges was the better color temperature compared to the bulb incandescent. The color temperature qualities of CFLs have improved dramatically over the first generation of CFLs. The government's Energy Star website provides images and standards for those interested in determining the correct CFL for certain applications. According to the site, a regular incandescent bulb emits 2700-3000K, and most Energy Star qualified replacement lights have been designed to emit the same ranges more efficiently than incandescent bulbs. The quality of this new alternative has been recognized by the Government and its mandate will convey these developments to the general public.
