Slavery was truly a heinous time in our nation's history. During this time, countless beatings, deaths, rapes, and painful moments occurred. It was a time when native Africans were evicted from their homes without a second thought. They were welcomed into the worst possible accommodation in the bottom of a ship on the long voyage to America. When they arrived, they were auctioned off at conventions as if they were objects or animals. Once sold, they worked on the plantations. They would work almost constantly; often, even on Sundays. They were provided with the absolute minimum living conditions and accommodations, just enough to keep them going. In addition to not having the opportunity to receive an education, families were often separated at auctions while others were forced to reunite for monetary reasons. Although many slaves found religion when they arrived in the New World, it too was bittersweet. They had to go against their new Christian conventions to survive; they often had to steal from their master to eat and were even tidy...
