One of the major problems America faces today within correctional institutions is adequate and affordable healthcare for inmates. Millions of inmates in U.S. correctional facilities have high rates of communicable diseases, such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, tuberculosis, hepatitis B virus infection, and gonorrhea. Before many inmates were incarcerated, most inmates had limited access to health care, which, combined with poor compliance and lifestyle situations, made identification and treatment within the general community difficult . Providing health care to inmates in jails and prisons may provide the opportunity to control the spread of some communicable diseases. Communicable diseases are common among approximately 1.2 million inmates in U.S. jails and prisons. Inmates in jails and prisons represent a portion of the population that is difficult to care for within the community. Many inmates are poor and have no access to health care outside of correctional facilities. Their lifestyle outside of jails and prisons can also make it difficult to comply with different types of healthcare. Inmates at many institutions undergo physical exams and tests for certain communicable diseases. But just because they receive testing doesn't mean they will receive the proper treatment for their illness while incarcerated. It is sometimes difficult for prisons to treat infected people. Mainly because inmates refuse to inform them of any illness they may have had before their incarceration, or they are never checked, and the illness is not detected until months or perhaps even years later. Some inmates may not disclose the… half of the document… the lack of health care inmates receive and how this could be harmful to the community if the inmate is released. People don't realize that once released from prison, most of them have not been treated properly for any illness they may have had before being incarcerated, or something they contracted while incarcerated. Without the proper treatment for these prisoners, these prisoners are released back into public among everyone else in the world with the same diseases and risk infecting everyone they come into contact with. This subsequently leads to the spread of these viruses and makes the issue of affordable healthcare for people around the world a major issue, not only for those who cannot afford healthcare, but for all individuals who need treatment medical. be careful due to the spread of these viruses by previous inmates.
