“The sun never sets on the British Empire” a true statement of the sheer might of the British Empire from the mid 1600s until the second Great War, and considered one of the greatest empires ever built and certainly one of the largest. Great Britain is a small island located in the north, north-west of mainland Europe, shared with Ireland and Scotland to the west, being a small island country, materials were scarce, but the English were able to get around this problem with trade and colonization. . A key aspect of Britain's success would be its navy, proclaimed in their own patriotic song Rule, Britannia! Positioned on an island and the world being 75% water, they were very well adapted to landing ships in the driest and most remote places on earth. Affecting India, Australia and Canada, the spread of their reach should be taken with a grain of salt. Some places would prosper and become great nations in the present day, while others collapsed after resources ran out and the English packed their bags. The Indian class system was able to send individuals to England to obtain an education, returning home to use it for the betterment of the Indians; funds were even allocated by the British to the Indians for whatever they chose. Of course today we see India as a thriving country, with an approximate population of 1.2 billion people and a literacy rate of 77%; considering religious and ethnic groups, as well as the vast land mass, this number is relatively high and continues to grow. This is just one of the success stories of the British Empire, over the course of their time in power many atrocities occurred, from slavery to comparing the original inhabitants to savages; even shaping tribal boundaries, causing civil wars and disruptions around the world. With global expansion, there will always be... middle of paper... colonies for the world's largest superpower, and until World War II, they were all associated with Great Britain. Participate in the financial rise and fall of global markets, the progress of the human race, and even collaborate with one of the largest police forces in the world. Each of these colonies had their hardships and some atrocities, but that doesn't mean life isn't better without them; because without such expansion we would not be sitting, standing or breathing in this place, but in another very different location in the world. What began as global and economic progress on the part of the English, ended with both positive and negative positions throughout the world; but that doesn't mean Canada, Australia and India are on that list. Empire building has both its vicissitudes and, with these three countries, it ended in the black.
