In Margaret Atwood's novel, Oryx and Crake, she constantly places the reader in an uncomfortable environment. The story takes place in a not so distant future where today's world no longer exists due to an unknown catastrophe. The only human is a man who calls himself the Abominable Snowman or Snowman for short, but as a child his name was Jimmy. If the thought of being all alone in the world isn't disturbing enough, Atwood takes the opportunity to point out the flaws of the modern world through Snowman's memories of Jimmy's childhood. The truths exposed are events that people do not want to acknowledge: animal abuse for human progress, the elimination of human interaction due to technology, and at the heart of the novel is the disturbing image that slavery is still present. Modern servitude is a disturbing topic that has remained hidden for too long. However, the truth is exposed in Oryx's traumatic story. To understand today's troubled societies, Atwood exposes the dark world of child slavery through the character Oryx, but provides subtle insights into how to change the world for the better before it's too late. Snowman lives in a world of isolation and desperation; Be that as it may, the world Jimmy lived in was not similar to that of Snowman. Before a catastrophic epidemic erupted that wiped out the entire human race, the world looked like the United States of America in 2014: children attended school, educators pushed students to understand math and science, and parents were absorbed from your own desires. Obviously, the book is science fiction and is not set in the present day, as citizens live in high-security research compounds or in... middle of paper......have monetary value, because then at least who would want profiting from you would make sure you are fed enough and not harmed too much. Furthermore, there were many who had neither love nor monetary value, and having one of these things was better than having nothing. (Atwood 126) It was better to be held in bondage and seen as an object of pleasure than to have nothing. Human trafficking is not something that should continue. It will take time and effort to stop it, but if all individuals put a little more effort into preventing and ending sexual slavery, a child would never find themselves alone in the world again and would have to continue to believe in a love that it was never obtainable.Works CitedAtwood, Margaret.
