The story is divided into several eras. Each era is defined by the behavioral characteristics shared by a nation or the world's population; as we in the United States called the Roaring '20s. Those who break the pattern of that specific period are the ones who contribute to the evolution of society. Geoffrey Chaucer, an English writer, was one of the people responsible for breaking the mold of literature in the medieval period. In his work The Canterbury Tales he presents a mixture of medieval and Renaissance features, making him a transitional writer. These traits are represented by the predominant presence of Christian values and comedy. The establishment of Christianity defines the medieval period. Today Christianity is one of the most popular religions, but during the Middle Ages it was twice or more popular than today. Christianity was so popular that in the literature created during this era.
